This study examines the alternation between the verbal patterns faʿʿala and afʿala in Sūrat Yūsuf, combining linguistic theory and Qur’anic exegesis. It integrates modern phonological insights, especially syllabic phonology, to show that meaning is shaped not only by morphology but also by deeper sound structures.
Using a generative approach that combines morphological, semantic, and phonological analysis, the study argues that this alternation reflects a systematic link between sound structure and narrative function, rather than mere stylistic variation. It ultimately advocates for an integrated interpretive model that unites traditional and modern linguistic approaches to uncover deeper layers of meaning.
